Space so big it begins to close in on you, the sky seems so endlessly massive and close that it’s disconcerting. The only real limits to your field of vision are the curvature of the earth. You begin to get some sense of how small a thing you really are. Eventually I came to the head of Chisolm Canyon (which is actually labeled with a small sign), a much larger gash carved by a still flowing river. The river proved too shallow for swimming, though I dipped my shirt in it to cool off.
