"We have been told that primitive peoples discovered the smelting process while baking bread. They happened to include some copper ore in their ovens and, when they completed their bakery chores for the day, dis­ covered that they had smelted ores to produce copper or iron while making their primitive pastries. But an oven has to be in the neighborhood of 1 ,500'C in order to break down ore.
